Dismissal - and now? Immediate measures when unemployment threatens

In August 2025, around 3 million people were registered as unemployed in Germany, an increase of around 46,000 compared to the previous month. According to the Federal Employment Agency, the unemployment rate is 6.4%. These figures make it clear that job loss is not a theoretical risk, but a reality. This makes it all the more important to act quickly and deliberately, not only to secure entitlements, but also to open up new prospects.

What you should do immediately after being made redundant

If you find out that your employment relationship is ending, these steps will help you to avoid disadvantages and manage the transition:

  • Register as a jobseeker: From the moment you know your contract is ending - ideally three months in advance. If the notice period is shorter or you have been given notice at short notice, you must register no later than three days after you have been informed of the termination. This will help you to avoid any suspension periods.
  • Register as unemployed: On the day you can no longer work or your job ends, you should register as unemployed. This will secure your entitlement to benefits such as unemployment benefit.
  • Gather all documents together: Letter of termination, employment contract, proof of social insurance periods, certificates, CV - Agentur für Arbeit needs these documents and they make applications easier.
  • Keep an eye on deadlines: Missing or late notifications can lead to blocking periods. It is worth acting as early as possible.

Further training: Your key to new opportunities

Resignation does not mean standing still, because further training can open doors during this phase:

Refresh your qualifications: Especially in future-oriented areas (e.g. digital skills, sustainability, new technologies), it is important to expand your own skills.

Use support: Agentur für Arbeit offers forms of support such as Bildungsgutscheine for job seekers or unemployed people.

Make reorientation possible: Perhaps this phase offers the opportunity to explore a field that has interested you for some time; further training can set you on the path to a new career.

Self-confidence & activity: Staying active, acquiring new skills and preparing yourself signals commitment. This not only has a positive effect on your own head, but also on Bewerbungsprozess.

Recognize the opportunities

A redundancy can also prove to be a turning point:

Early action reduces the duration of unemployment.

You can increase your market value if you undertake meaningful and targeted further training. A well-chosen training path can mean that you are not only comparable, but even "better positioned" for your next job.
